The Faces of the Market
Photos by Kelli Freshman
Kelli Freshman and I have known each other a long time. She's photographed million dollar weddings, Girl Scout galas, and famous ballet dancers. Her work has been published in books and The New York Times.
So, recently, when I had the idea of doing a 'faces of the market' series, I approached Kelli who eagerly took up the cause. A couple weeks ago, we surprised vendors on a Saturday morning and captured our lovely artists, and hard working farmers in their natural habitat.
Longtime vendor, coffee addict and ceramist Min Oh owns Tinyfish productions based in Murray. Drink from one of her hand made mugs and I swear, the coffee or tea will taste better.
James Wayman's 44 Magnum Farm and Ranch is headquartered in West Mountain, Utah. Their cattle graze on mountain pastures during the summer and on dormant hay fields during the winter. Grass fed, grass-finished, their cows are bred for intramuscular fat (marbling), milk quality, and mothering.
Anastasio Castillo turned 80 years old last year. Listen to him belt out his version of “Nel blu, dipinto di blu.” Gorgeous.
"I eat, sleep, and dream B." B told us of Keeper of the B.
Seriously, he goes by B. All of his honey is unfiltered, unpasteurized, raw and local. Let him give you a taste of his Duchesne honey and then compare that to his Park City hives. You'll be surprised by the difference!
David Rhone-Lida and his wife Elizabeth have lived in Salt Lake for more than 30 years. Their hand woven baskets are works of art. I gave one to my Mom for Christmas a few years ago and she often tells me it is her favorite present I've ever given her.
