Dear John
As the leaves begin to turn and the harvest season comes to a close, we gather on our last Market in Pioneer Park this season to celebrate a cherished member of our community, John Borski, who is retiring after an incredible journey at the Downtown Farmers Market.
A real “man’s man,” you might not know John started his career under the iconic choreographer, George Balanchine.
Yup, he was a ballet dancer with New York City Ballet and had an accomplished career during the Company’s most prolific era. That is, until he had a falling out with Jerome Robbins (West Side Story, please keep up).
See that shirtless guy on the right, that's Borski in The Nutcracker
Along with Jorge Fierro, John was there for the inaugural Farmers Market in 1992. Let's call them "The Deans" of the Market. (Don't let it go to your head, Jorge.)
John and his wife Heather, and Earth have been some of the most regular and positive faces, building the community and culture of the Market from the beginning.
All the while educating us about the benefits of local, sustainable farming and supporting small businesses.
His stand has become a staple of the Market. When you don’t have a lot of time, Borski Farms is always on the short list of booths to visit because you know the quality of his produce, fruits, and vegetables… from juicy tomatoes in the summer to hearty squash in the fall.
As John embarks on this new chapter of his life, we want him to know how deeply he will be missed. His legacy will continue to flourish in the community he has nurtured through his hard work and dedication.
Please join us in celebrating not just a farmer, but a friend to us all. Let’s make this farewell a memorable one!
